Halcyonic Flow by DMMDesign Halcyonic Flow by DMMDesign

Truckee River between Tahoe City and Truckee. Water is barely moving after two lousy winters here. I walked out to the middle of the river to take this shot - normally that's not possible as the water is too deep and flowing too fast. I didn't get frost bite from the cold water but did come home with a nasty splinter in my foot! The water is barely moving with the exception of the few splash marks you can see in the photo from where the fish were jump out. Anyways, I'm happy with the photo, but it was cold, cold, COLD!

Okay, so let me start out by saying that this is a very lovely picture and i would love to have like a post card of it or something. and where it would make a very nice post card, as and art piece its not anything that i haven't seen before and it not really that strongest piece of photography I have seen either. now don't get me wrong i would love the way this picture is framed and it has very lighting and atmosphere. My problem comes in when i start to think of it less as a picture and more as an art piece. The problem with it as an art piece is that there is nothing really all that interesting to look at. One person who i feel does really interesting landscapes is Zack Schnepf. his photos have this personality to them that really just makes these landscapes feel alive. If you look at his work you will see that he treats his photos almost like a painting, and the result of this is a very surreal experience.

My advice to you would be to try using a range of lenses, and see what you get, as well as looking into some really artsy photographers and seeing what you get, but if you really don't want to go into that artsy stuff so much you can always just keep doing what your doing because this picture is beautiful.
What do you think?

I think it is a fantastic shot. The colors contrast well, with the exception that there may be a little too much magenta, giving the photo an overall tint.  I like scenic views and to me the tranquility of this particular shot is what is most striking about it.  It evokes memories of sitting by the campfire on a crisp fall morning and watching the sunrise.  Great job!

This is nice looking, but it's got to move to be good. We had a dry spell yr before. Fires everywhere.

Thank you. Moving water would give it a whole different effect. You can obtain that dreaming movement effect but no mirror image. When this river is moving it is too dangerous to be in the middle of, plus without a solid surface a long exposure is going to turn out blurry. I took a photo of something that people rarely, if ever, see around here and that is the Truckee river almost completely stagnant. This is the river which Lake Tahoe drains into - that's millions of tons of snow melting and draining through this canyon every summer and fall - but after two terrible snow years it's finally took it's toll on the area. I've lived here for 20 years and don't remember seeing it this still.

First off, I'm so sorry about your foot, I hope you're feeling better. The image turned out spectacular for all the pains you had to go through for it. I salute you, trooper. Both I and my absurdly small pain threshold. In regards to the image, you captured it's splendor magnificently, I really like the glass-like effect of the water and the impeccable reflections you've caught on its surface. I really like the splash marks too, their presence doesn't disrupt the fluidity of the image and actually fit in quite nicely as a whole. I also really like how the trees on either side of the image gravitate towards the edges. It exposes more of the sky, in my opinion, and gives the image a more open and dynamic feeling. The composition is fantastic and the colors are breathtaking. Wonderful work!

LOL - no problem with the foot! Just a wee little splinter and numb feet. More of just jokingly complaining about how rough I have it! :) I really appreciate your kind words. Composition is the hardest part of photography for me and I'm learning all the way - but I'm glad to no that I have done well here.

Oh, that's good to hear, I'm glad you're feeling better and milking it for all its worth, no doubt! Haha ;) I definitely agree on the composition thing, it is certainly the most difficult part. But you did a great job with it here, I think. :) Keep up the excellent work!
